An invaluable first text in world History
With this work, Culpin furnishes Keystage 4 pupils with a comprehensive grounding in modern world History.
The material, a combination of primary sources and Culpin's own renowned analyses, is presented in a clear and digestible format. The reader is deftly guided through difficult material. And despite the thought-provoking way in which complex subjects are tackled, one never finds oneself thinking "What's going on?"
Of particular note are the excellent sections on the Russian revolutions (including a concise yet moving account of Fr Gapon's 1905 revolution), and the Wall Street Crash. Source material comes from characters as diverse as Krupskaya Lenin and "Yip" Harburg. Excellent stuff!
I cannot recommend this text highly enough for anyone embarking on a first History course.
Excellent!
Culpin's book is the best introduction I have seen covering 20th century world history for GCSE. The narrative text is a model of clarity and readability and the selection of factual material shows considerable experience in teaching and examining. The exercises get students thinking dynamically and working with source material against the supportive text. There is a good balance between graphics and text and the layout avoids the confusing effect some texts suffer from in over complex layouts. I'd recommend this book as a History teacher not only to students but to anyone who wants to find out about what happened in the 20th century and why. Culpin avoids one of the most difficult jobs in narrating history - getting bogged down and breaking up the flow of thought on a given topic - without ignoring any of the key points.
