Special
We have probably all heard of Patton - and this book shows him to be a very special character - flawed like so many people that carry the "genius" label. Still not sure I'd have liked him - but I cetainly respect and admire what he did and stood for - more so after reading this (the film does not do him justice!)
Excellent writer and a fascinating subject.
Carlo d'Este has written another masterpiece.
Patton is a character in a million.
His dedication to the art of war started as a child and through luck, the right connections and the right decisions he brought his life to a climax in the break out from Normandy. Carlo book is in his masterful manner and you become so absorbed by Patton, his thinking and his life, he served in the Mexico war, the First World War, he competed in the Olympic Games, and the lead up to and into the Second World War that you will have difficulty in putting the book down. Patton's death, in 1945 probably matched his desire, he was not and never could have been a civilian and peace as a soldier never rested happily on Patton's shoulders.
Exhaustive and finally exhausting
D'Este prefers telling all the anecdotes to the telling anecdote. After a while, too many stories were too much for me.
