A sparkling and up-to-date new cover for one of Fontana Press's strongest-selling titles. 'Jung was on a giant scale!he was a master physician of the soul in his insights, a profound sage in his conclusions. He is also one of Western Man's great liberators.' J. B. Priestly, Sunday Telegraph 'Jung can sometimes rise to the heights of a Blake or a Nietzsche or a Kierkegaard!like any true prophet or artist, he extended the range of the human imagination!to be able to share Jungian emotions is surely an almost necessary capacity of the free mind.' Philip Toynbee, Observer This compact volume of extracts from the twenty volumes of Jung's published writings presents him clearly, in his own words and in precis. Jung's writing is the key to understanding 20th-century psychology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Most of the terms of reference now used ('extrovert', 'collective unconscious', 'archetype') are Jungian. This is essential reading for both students of psychology and the general reader.

Review

Journal of Analytical Psychology 'Anthony Storr offers a commentary that is admirably clear and unfailingly level in tone.' Liam Hudson, Sunday Times
About the Author
C.G.JUNG was one of the great figures of the 20th century. He radically changed not just the study of psychology (setting up the Jungian school of thought) but the very way in which insanity is treated and perceived in our society. The editor, ANTHONY STORR, is a doctor, psychiatrist and analyst (trained in the school of C.G.Jung) and author of Jung (a Fontana Modern Master,1973) amongst many others.

The journey of a thousand miles begins here
With Jung's output spread over many volumes and not always systematically arranged this book is an ideal place to start. The bulk of Jung's range is here with writings on therapy, archetypes, Alchemy, society and religion. There is also a glossary at the back of the terms Jung used in his writings. For those who want a single volume of Jung this is ideal. For those who are starting to explore his thinking which can repay huge rewards, this is the best place to get an overview. Highly recomended.
Excellent introduction to a vast body of work for the novice
Anthony Storr has selected from, organised and annotated Jung's vast collection of writings into a single volume that provides a good introduction to remarkable ideas such as individuation, archetypes, the collective unconscious and synchronicity. This book is a great introduction to Jung for the layman and I would certainly recommend starting with this prior to reading any of the "Collected Works of C.G.Jung" series.
Excellent: succinct, clear, thorough
I was not at all familiar with the ideas of Jung before reading this compendium of his work, so it is difficult for me to pass judgment on the comprehensiveness and impartiality of the book. However, seeing as it was praised by leading Jung authorities, and that Storr has structured the volume in such a way that it is left to Jung himself to expound Jungian philosophy, it is a safe guess that we are presented with the undiluted thought of the founder of analytical psychology.
The book is split into ten chapters. Each one deals with a specific aspect of Jung's psychology by using excerpts of varying length. Storr introduces each excerpt with a concise summary of its content, which is especially helpful with some of the more esoteric passages, of which there are a few!
This is a fascinating read and just brimming with edifying stuff. Jung's defence of religion is refreshing and original; his interpretation of the story of Job is just excellent; his exposition of the archetypes, although rarefied and sometimes obscure, is exciting and stimulating for the imagination.
Familiarity with his unconventional mode of thought will leave you more open to the possibilities inherent in man and will introduce you to 'wacky' ideas made plausible. Much of the material in here has a (briefly) liberating effect.
Storr's introduction at the beginning of the work is invaluable, and I would recommend it be read before and after tackling the main body of the work.
If you are at all curious about Jung but don't know where to start, start here.
