Product Description

Mog's exploits at Debbie's birthday party are pretty hair-raising, but they're not nearly as exciting as what happens when he drifts off to sleep and romps his way through the alphabet.

About the Author
Judith Kerr was born on 14 June 1923 in Berlin but escaped from Hitler's Germany with her parents and brother in 1933 when she was nine years old. Her father was a drama critic and a distinguished writer whose books were burned by the Nazis. The family passed through Switzerland and France before arriving finally in England in 1936. Judith went to eleven different schools, worked in the Red Cross during the war, and won a scholarship to the Central School of Arts and Crafts in 1945. Since then she has worked as an artist, a BBC television scriptwriter and, for the past thirty years, as author and illustrator of children's books.
Her three autobiographical novels are based on her early wandering years (which against all the odds she greatly enjoyed), her adolescence in London during the war, and finally on a brief return to Berlin as a young married woman. The stories have been internationally acclaimed and, to the author's considerable satisfaction, have done particularly well in Germany where they are sometimes used as an easy introduction to a difficult period of Germany history.
Judith Kerr is also the creator of the much loved Mog picture book series as well as other favourites including `The Tiger Who Came To Tea'.
She is married to the writer Nigel Kneale. Their daughter Tracy makes puppets for films and their son Matthew is an acclaimed novelist.

Surreal alphabet adventure5
When Mog misbehaves at Debbie's birthday party, she skulks away in disgrace and falls asleep under the table. Her dreams lead us on a surreal journey through the alphabet, but all ends well when she awakes in time for Debbie's birthday trip to the zoo.

This is a great alternative to the usual 'A is for apple, B is for ball' type of alphabet books. The story keeps children involved and encourages frequent reading, whilst the wonderful illustrations mean that a number of unfamiliar words are painlessly absorbed into the child's vocabulary.

Surreal alphabet journey5
When Mog causes mayhem at Debbie's birthday party, she skulks away in disgrace and falls asleep under the table. Her dreams take her on a surreal journey through the alphabet, before she awakes to join Debbie and her friends at the zoo. This is a great book to make learning letters more exciting than just A for apple, B for ball etc., as toddlers see it as a story rather than just a learning exercise. The illustrations are delightful, and help introduce a number of unfamiliar words painlessly.

Best ABC book5
This has such a strong story, driven by wonderfully detailed illustrations that you'd expect from Judith Kerr, that you don't realise you are being 'taught' the ABC. In fact, that's the least of it as we follow Mog's nightmarish dream via jelly, jaguars, princesses and purple palaces, giant rats and Nicky with his net (lots of alliteration). I have no idea if this helped my daughter with her alphabet, but more importantly it allows imaginative escape into the world of images, which she loved week after week for about 2 years from ages 3.5-6.
