Product Description

The compelling sequel to The Reindeer People , a saga of magic and triumph in an ancient world. Kerlew stared at the immense stone that jutted up from the tundra. Power radiated from it like heat from a fire. It attracted the boy and filled him with fear. And then he was alone. There was a brush of sound, of dark moving shadows and then the sudden flash of a glistening eye. He pressed his palms back against the stone's rough surface and faced the night creatures that surrounded him. The magic is strong in Kerlew. Every day it grows, reaching out to the Wolf spirit that will be his guide. But the magic in Kerlew that calls to the beasts and to the spirit world also calls to Carp, the evil old shaman, who follows Kerlew and his mother, Tillu, across the frozen wastes. When he finds them, he will bind them to him, and shape Kerlew's powers for his own uses.

Customer Reviews

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book4
This is a beautifully written, clever, subtle novel. It's very different from the writer's work as Robin Hobb - and yet the theme of a man/wolf bond, the tall, black-haired, complex hero, certainly do point to her later work. It's refreshingly different from the run of the mill fantasy 'adventure', which would please some, disappoint others. As a sequel to 'The Reindeer People', it ties all the ends up neatly. Common to the writers work as Robin Hobb, you're left thinking about the issues raised, and with affection for the characters created. On the downside, I do think this and 'The Reindeer People' would have been much better presented as one novel. However, on the strength of this novel I do intend to read all the Megan Lindholm novels as they are republished - whilst eagerly waiting for the next Robin Hobb trilogy!!

Return of the Shaman5
The conclusion to The Reindeer People sees the development of this intense story. Megan Lindolm's skill at making magic seem real is once again seen in action. If you like natural magic (shamanism), weird intense kids for heros (the shaman's apprentice) and native american folklore, this is the book for you! A great staisfying ending too!

A dark fantasy with a lot going for it4
For anyone who doesn't know Megan Lindholm and Robin Hobb are the same person. So from that it should come as little suprise that this book expands upon themes that croppoed up in Robin Hobbs Assasin Trilogy

Expanding upon the use of the Wit and the pack relationship this book follows a young boy on both a journey of self discovery and a coming of age as he and his mother travel with their steps dogged by as evil a villain as you could wish in the old shaman (indeed if there's a fault to this book it lies in the stereotypical nature of the villan)

If you've enjoyed Robin Hobb then you must pick this up if you've yet to experience it then this and Alien Earth are the places to start
