Jalal-uddin Rumi was born in what is now Afghanistan in 1207. His poetry has inspired generations of spiritual seekers, both from his own Sufi school and well beyond. His poems speak to the seeker and the lover in all of us. He is one of the world's most loved poets and spiritual teachers, and is currently the bestselling poet in America. Translations of his work are becoming international bestsellers; Deepak Chopra has set Rumi's poems to music in CD form; films of his life are being optioned. These beautiful, contemporary new translations speak directly to us, now. The poems in this collection will be grouped thematically. They will be accompanied by stunning, evocative paintings by Melita Kolin (one of the translators), done especially for the book, as well as Persian calligraphy of the poems.

From Hidden Music: My love, you are closer to me than myself, You shine through my eyes. Your light is brighter than the moon. Step into the garden So all the flowers, even the tall poplar Can kneel before your beauty. Let your voice silence the lily Famous for its hundred tongues.

Jewel of a book

Beautifully presented, with equally beautiful words
This book introduced the work of Rumi to me, and it truly did delight me. The book is presented beautifully. Not only are there translations of Rumi's poetry, but Mafi and Kolin also provide quite beautiful paintings inspired by the words of this great poet.
The language is simple yet the meanings are quite profound. This makes it easily accessible. Any true lover of poetry will appreciate this book, there is alot to be taken from it.
An example of the poetry, an extract I like especially, is:
"Bring back to me my fleeting lover
make up excuses, sing him beautiful songs,
convince this exquisite Moon
to come back home."
This book has served to widen my love for poetry, and surely that is a gift in its own right.
