Amazon.co.uk Review
Agent Sean Dillon returns in Midnight Runner, a sequel to 2001's Edge of Danger, in which author Jack Higgins, a consistently solid thriller writer, introduced the intriguing and powerful Arab/English Rashid family. Kate, the only Rashid left after an assassination attempt on the American president foiled by Dillon, has sworn to avenge her family and will do anything to humiliate the United States, including sabotage her own oil fields to cripple America's--and the world's--oil supplies.
The fast-paced action starts with the death of a presidential envoy's daughter and ends with an explosive showdown in the Rashid oil fields. Higgins makes the most of a somewhat thin plot with superb pacing and terrific action sequences. From Dillon's earlier adventures, he brings back Harry and Billy Salter, the agent's "reasonably but not totally respectable" gangster pals; White House operative Blake Johnson; and Sean's boss, General Ferguson. The new characters include a Vietnam war hero who's a roving troubleshooter for President Jake Cazalet, and another villainous Rashid, Kate's American cousin Chauncey. And while Kate seems to be down for the count at the end of this adventure, Dillon and his fans may not have seen the last of her yet. --Jane Adams

A welcome return to form
I was really disappointed with Jack Higgins last novel 'Edge of Danger'. However, Midnight Runner, which takes up the story where Edge of Danger finished, reveals a return to form by Mr Higgins. Indeed if the two books had been issued as one I would never have dared critised the author.
I sincerely hope that Mr Higgins maintains his return to the form.
run of the mill
This really has been churned out. I suspect that without the jack Higgins name on it, it would have vanished without a trace.
Characters with no depth, no tension, minimal plot and too many times you just thought "but why don't they just...."
Mainly I just thought "why did I bother?". Tragically he can write so well when he puts his mind to it.
Continued Suspense by Master Thriller Writer Jack Higgins
This sequal to Higgins last book continues to supply a thrill a minute.
The old favourites are back:The silky smooth Sean Dillon ex IRA Enforcer. The team at the Secret Service, the American Presidents Special Force and the local london gangsters.
Add the Rashid Empire run by a beautiful lady Kate Rashid who has sworn revenge for the killing of her brothers, and a plot develops that is enthralling.
IRA bomb makers, desert scouts, commanded by an English Army Captain named Villiars, plots by the IRA to blow up a bridge that is linked to oil pipelines supplying both America and Russia owned by Kate Rashid, send the irrepresible and loveable Dillon scurring off to Ireland and the Far East in an attempt to save the economy of the World and the American Presidents job.
Time and time again Dillon escapes death by the skin of his teeth, and against all the odds comes up trumps.Watch out for the twist and turns as the story unfolds.
For all of us avid Jack Higgins fans this was a Fix and we all await with anticipation his next release.Excellent,Thrilling,Tense, and written with Humour. Difficult to put down once picked up.
