Product Description

This book carries on the tradition of the solo village witch emphasizing white rather than black magic. It is a practical manual of instruction for those who choose the solo path of study and particularly stresses the importance of being in tune with nature. As there are approximately 13 moons each year -- the book is divided into 13 parts. Each section is aimed at lasting from the new moon to the dark to make the student fully aware of the changing power in the tides of the sea and the tides of the self. The moon-long sections deal with a variety of taditional arts, skills and mental exercises which enables the aspiring witch to discover the inner world of magic inside him/herself.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Written for serious practitioners, Marian Green's Witch Alone: Thirteen Moons to Master Natural Magic guides those who wish to learn the "old religion" without the aid of a coven. Densely written in serious tone, Witch Alone is nonetheless an inspiring and poetic read. Exercises at the end of each chapter are designed to take a full 28 nights to accomplish, and are designed to progressively lead one on the path to success. Worshippers of the goddess and those interested in exploring the deeper aspects of their own soul will find this tome deeply informative, but for the neo-pagan committed to learning solitary witchcraft, Witch Alone is a must-read. --P Randall Cohan

Customer Reviews

Strictly for beginners3
After reading such enthusiastic reviews here on Amazon and having respected Marian Green's work for a good many years I was tempted into buying A Witch Alone, which I was expecting to provide me with a course of serious disciplined study. I was thoroughly disappointed; this book is strictly for beginners. If you are totally new to the Craft and want to get to grips with natural magic and the pagan worldview, then this is probably one of the better publications to help you do just that. It will help you to form a magical relationship between yourself and the natural world, and will encourage you to see yourself in terms of that relationship. It takes a simple approach to natural magic and there is no dressing up in regalia and waving swords around or trying to memorise long-winded incantations. Green's approach is centred around showing the novice how to re-examine their world and look at it with fresh eyes. Unfortunately the book is crammed with heavily-romanticised references to "simple country folk" and harks back to days of yore in an irritatingly twee fashion. Sadly the Craft is full of just such pseudo-historical romantic nonsense that has very little basis in fact, and I would strongly advise anyone interested in learning more about modern pagan witchcraft, or anyone reading A Witch Alone, to also read the works of Ronald Hutton, particularly The Triumph of the Moon. Hutton's work is the first serious attempt to give the Craft a meaningful historical context that is not based on misleading romantic notions of the Village Wise Woman, but rather on the available evidence. For this reason I am hesitant to wholeheartedly recommend A Witch Alone to the beginner without at least adding a caveat about its "historical" content.

Clear and "Unputdownable"5
I am on the druid path, but also interested in natural magic. I have already read a couple of books on the subject which I have researched by public opinion, and which I have found to be "fair". Only yesterday did I receive my copy of this book. I find it beautiful and "unputdownable". The author clearly reveres her path and it shows. The language is wonderful and descriptions clear. Already I have found out a great deal about the goddess and god, clearly described, which have so far been confusing me. Altogether a good book for a newcomer.

Brilliant 'hands-on' training manual!5
I initially bought this book around 6 years ago and began to read it with a view to self-training in the Craft. It is a totally no-nonsense, practical manual giving advice to those interested in 'green' magic and traditional earth-based lore. In addition, Marian is extremely knowledgeable about the pagan history of the UK (and indeed other cultures) and also brings a deep understanding of psychology to her subject. You won't find any of the - dare I say rather Americanised - approach to the Craft here, just a solid and steady explanation of the old ways together with practical exercises at the end of each chapter - it should be viewed as a text book to aid learning. I eventually combined the book with the corresponding distance-learning course offered by Marian, and have learned a great deal in the process. She is a thoroughly knowledgeable and ethical educator, and I recommend this book very highly if your interest in the craft of the wise is a genuine one.
