Product Description

This is the fourth title in Collins' Artist's Studio series for the intermediate painter. Ann Blockley is a very successful artist, known for the innovative way in which she uses texture as a key element in her work, and this book looks specifically at how she achieves her stunning effects. Creating texture in watercolour can be quite a challenge but this book provides a fresh approach to the subject. It focuses on a wide range of unusual techniques, some of which depart from the more conventional methods, revealing how to portray texture by a variety of means. Ann explains how to manipulate the paint by lifting out colour, scraping and scratching the paint, and by using additional materials such as wax, clingfilm, salt and metallic pigments. She also explains how the surface itself can play an important role in the effects that can be achieved, and experiments with acrylics, inks, gouache and collage as well as watercolour. In later chapters Ann looks at the creative process and provides insights into how to develop ideas, then concentrates on how to portray texture in specific subjects, such as flowers and foliage, animals, still life, buildings and landscapes. Key features of the book include: / Explore Further exercises / Studio Tips / Practical projects / Step-by-step demonstrations In order to provide a broader view and different styles of painting, the work of several guest artists is also featured -- John Blockley, Moira Huntly and Shirley Trevena. Other titles in the series: Loosen Up Your Watercolours, Judi Whitton Secrets of Watercolour Success, Hazel Soan Vibrant Watercolours, Shirley Trevena (October 2006)

inspiring3
I found this book very inspiring, different from most other books I have bought since starting to paint two years ago. Ann Blockley has given me a new dimension to my painting, now I try to be more adventurous. This book explains clearly how to incorporate different techniques, I certainly found no problems in trying them all. GREAT!

plenty of imaginative ideas for everyone4
A very exciting book for any one wishing to extend their ability with watercolours and acryllics. The ideas are well illustrated and explained. Recommended for those who feel caught in a rut with their current work and want to be considerably more daring in approach.

delight5
This is not a beginners how to do it book. I am not keen on all of this author's work. However this book is inspiring and a great help with ideas and possible surface treatments and techniques with water colour.
Lots of examples and a pleasure to browse.
