Synopsis
This study spans the two decades between the two World Wars and looks at the lives of those women known as the "gallant girls" of wartime who were subsequently told to go "back to the home" when the war finished. The author covers all classes, looks at the media images of women, their education, employment, health, politics and leisure habits. Many stories told in this book are of women without education, working alongside men at half their wage, at risk of death from childbirth and without a vote.
