The most up to date & readable book on the subject out there5
I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of this book from Mr. McManamy. Now, I am one of those people who struggle with my Bipolar I disorder and buy every book out there on the subject hoping to find something new, or something I can learn I didn't know on my illness.

I've been a reader of Mr. McMan's website for years, and his book does not dissapoint. John McManamy has a unique talent for taking the most complicated things and writing about them in a clear, concise BUT READABLE language. The patient stories he uses for examples brings the illness home to both those who suffer and illuminates it for the family and friends who try to understand but cannot.

I know there are many books out there on depression and bipolar. Some good, some bad. But if I was on a desert island and could onl bring one book on this subject, this would be the book I would choose. It's a real keeper.

The book I wish I'd had 11 years ago5
John MacManamy deserves a big heartfelt thank you from all people suffering from a mood disorder and their loved ones. I was diagnosed with bipolar 11 years ago exactly. I live in Italy. I had no resources to read. Then my sister read a review of Dr Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" in TIME and called me. "This is you to a t", she said. I ordered the book, read it in a few hours and didn't feel so alone any more. In her book Dr Jamison pleaded with her colleagues to listen to patients and read their writings. Now psychiatrists have no excuse not to listen. John MacManamy has written the definitive self-help handbook and overview from the patient's perspective. Both Kay Jamison and John suggest that it's very hard for someone on the outside to understand what manic depression feels like. Still, for those who are willing to at least make the effort and jump the fence of stigma, this is as good a starting point as we'll ever get. Thank you, John!
