Product Description

The revised third edition contains 80 illustrations now in full colour! WINNER OF THE HIGHLY COMMENDED PRIZE IN THE ORTHOPAEDICS AND RHEUMATOLOGY CATEGORY OF THE 2007 BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION MEDICAL BOOK AWARDS ‘A previously good textbook has just got better! I particularly like the colour coding for chapters. Sections have been updated by experts in the individual topic areas. The new illustrations are used to demonstrate principles and example exercises. Brilliant: it is difficult to praise this book highly enough as it is an excellent textbook. The new illustrations, updated sections and use of eminent sports medicine specialists as co-authors help to reassure that every effort has been made to improve this book.’ BMA REVIEWER QUOTE Clinical Sports Medicine is one of McGraw-Hill Australia's best-selling titles—next to John Murtagh’s General Practice—and is also a most high-profile Australian title globally. The book was selected as the 2001 Book of the Year by the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Its appeal is that it is a comprehensive text on sports medicine and it adopts a broad, multi-disciplinary approach, therefore, sells well in fields such as massage therapy, physiotherapy and musculoskeletal specialties, as well as to sports physicians and sports trainers. This also means it has a broad appeal to medical students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, notably adopted on courses at Melbourne (where Peter Brukner is an associate professor), Monash, La Trobe, South Australia, Sydney and Griffith universities. Once more, as well as being a key title in the local and US medical catalogues, it is core to our growing sports medicine list. The two authors, Peter Brukner and Karim Khan, are high-profile sports physicians and academics, both having been heavily involved in the last three Olympic Games and presenting regularly overseas. Professor Brukner was the first non-American Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is an inaugural Fellow of the Australian College of Sports Medicine. Professor Khan has been based at the University of British Columbia, Canada, since 1995 and runs the authors’ website that strongly promotes the book using the cover as the main design theme, and includes abstracts that focus on sections applicable to particular disciplines.

From the Publisher
From Satisfied Users of the Second Edition

"Excellent practical book for clinicians. This very practical book that uses symptom-oriented chapters to provide very helpful guidance to anyone who sees sports medicine patients. It is useful for physical therapists (like me) but my colleagues who are doctors and masseurs also use it. I thoroughly recommend it and find its illustrations of physical examination particularly useful" - A reader from Seattle, USA

"Practical sports medicine book for physiotherapists, sports physicians This definitive sports medicine text book of 920 superbly-illustrated pages is the 'gold-standard' of sports medicine books. Its main emphasis is conservative care of musculoskeletal conditions and it is particularly up to date in management of overuse tendon conditions, the latest on shoulder rehabilitation, management of troublesome back problems and the athletic groin. It also covers issues such as enhancing sports performance with nutrition and psychology, traveling with a team and ethical issues in sport. The first edition was a great success but this second edition is a far superior book. And it is exceptional value for money. I strongly recommend those working with athletes and those treating musculoskeletal conditions to check this Australian-Canadian book out fully. It's a gem" - A physical therapist at Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

essential reading5
This second edition of the book is much improved, largely due to increased collaboration with sports medicine professionals, mainly from Australia. The chapters are updated and expanded and some new chapters are added. The improvement I liked most was the rehab programs which have been addeed to the text. As a sports physio, I found this invaluable. Essential reading for all involved in sports medicine.

Review of DVD not book!2
Most of my fellow reviewers here seem to have missed that they are reviewing the book instead of the DVD, as listed.

I must say I am very disappointed in the DVD. Whilst it has pretty comprehensive review of examinations of the upper limb, in the lower limb only the knee gets any real attention. The hip and ankle are almost completely left out, apart from taping of the latter!

When an area is touched upon it is pretty superficially discussed. Basically there is a quick run through of the examination of that area, but no discussion of the theory accompanying it.

In short, for the areas actually included, this DVD would serve as nothing more than an aide memoire and certainly won't teach you examinations of pat.

It is a shame - the accompanying book is excellent and this DVD had the potential to be an excellent resource for the student sports practitioner.

I hope therefore that the shortcomings are addressed in future editions of this media.

Definitely worth the upgrade from the 2nd edition5
Many of us have the 2nd edition (red cover) and feel it is still providing good service. However, I checked inside my old favourite and found that the 2nd edition was written in 2000! How the time flies!

This new edition LOOKS spectacular because of the colour photographs and the lovely artwork. The artist is a real discovery! But what impressed me much more was the amount of new practical material that I can use in my clinic. In the week that I have had this 3rd edition I have noticed that many, many chapters have had major overhauls. So the claim of '6 new chapters' really vastly under-estimates how much new material is in there.

The knee pain, knee injury, Achilles, wrist pain, and longstanding groin chapters are all very very helpful. And it is great to find so many of the leading authors in various field have contributed to this one book.

At over 1000 colour pages it really is terrific value for money and I figured that it will likely last me 5 years. Great value!

I didn't buy a copy of the DVD with physical examination and rehabilitation but my partner did - it is great for students.

All in all a tremendous upgrade, seems more like a new book really. I'm glad I grabbed this copy while in London last week -- apparently copies are still a few weeks away from arriving here in New York.
