The definitive source of ICE knowledge
Starting from first principals and building up to more advanced concepts, Heywood's definitive book has everything you would ever need to know about internal combustion engines. Whether you are studying, working in the automotive industry or are just interested in the subject this book is relied upon by those with a keen, professional interest. It covers simple topics first such as the operation of the engine and its individual components then builds to more advanced topics such as combustion and engine management systems. Heywood's book uses mathematical analysis that are very intense for the casual reader but the concepts are well represented graphically.
Seriously good book, but you have to love maths!
I used this book as a readable grounding in engine theory, but it is tough going at time, you really need maths at UK degree level, or a degree where maths is important, such as Engineering. You can skip the maths of course, but it is a major part of the book. To understand fully, this book would take a couple of years of re-reading and study. When you have read this, progress to the more difficult but more focused book by Dr Gordon Blair. If you want to know how engines *really* tick then this is the book to get.
Great book
This is a well detailed book starting from the basic and progressing to a complex analysis of the IC engine.
I have used this for my studies and modelling IC engines.
For my projects it provided all the equations for total engine frictions and the energies in fuels by their molecular properties.
It would be nice to see another publication showing how technology has changed the IC engine in the same amount of detail.
