One to miss
O.k. - so you're a fresh faced post grad student who has just landed the job of his/her dreams as a graduate engineer. You want to try and create a good impression and blow everyone away at your new office with your astounding knowledge of your subject - So you buy a book of engineering formulas believing that it will be incredibly useful and before too long you'll be chartered and receiving design awards.
There are probably hundreds of books that would perform this task admirably - unfortunately this is not one of them.
I've been working as an engineer in the South of England for a while now and I can honestly say that I haven't had the patience to use this book more than twice, and the reason for this is two-fold:
(1) The formulas/Data and notation appear to be geared towards the American market - not the British - which means spending ages working out what is useable and what isn't - before which needing an enigma machine to de-code the notation.
(2) The layout of the book is not logical or particularly nice.
Verdict: A British edition SHOULD have been produced for British engineers. My advice would be to avoid this one!
ONLY BUY IF AMERICAN!!
My husband had asked for the structural engineers pocket book by Fiona Cobb as a stocking filler for Christmas so I immediatley went onto Amazon to purchase it (which by the way is apparently fantastic and well worth the money). As i went ahead with my purchase it pointed out that 'the perfect partner' for this book was Civil Engineer Formulas. Brilliant I thought I'll get him this aswell. I wish I hadn't bothered wasting my money. My husband starting reading the book and soon realised that it was mainly aimed at the Americans and was pretty useless for a man who worked in Yorkshire!
