A Non-too-Thrilling Topic Made Very Clear4
Linear algebra isn't the most riveting of undergraduate maths courses (believe me), but is certainly the most fundamental. At most universities, this material is lectured at phenomenal speed, so it's nice to have a kind of touchstone you can refer to for more clarification. This book does nicely.

The book starts with some basic definitions of vector spaces (including the 8 axioms you'll need come exam time) and everything else develops from here. The sections on eigenvalues and diagonalization of matrices are of remarkable clarity (including the sometimes annoying "change of basis"). Also covered are the complex numbers (and complex matrices, with Mobius transforms as well), representation of linear maps by matrices, and geometric treatment of such abstract concepts as kernel, image and rank. There is also a brief introduction to some basic tensors (Kronnecker delta etc.)

The main reason I like this book so much is the hundreds (568 I believe) of worked examples. These alone are enough reason to buy this book, because I suspect many undergraduates (like me) will hate to see a method sitting in their notes and not have a clue how to apply it.

The other Schaum Outlines are also recommended, particularly the Differential Equations.

best algebra textbook i bought in 2nd year maths4
i agree 100% with "a customer" above. it is easy to read, many of useful examples and makes the subject bearable.
