Calculus made difficult1
If you can start at the beginning of this book and work through to the end, you don't need it. If you want to learn calculus by yourself, or refresh forgotten knowledge, go elsewhere.
This book seems to have been designed to make the subject as difficult as possible. Apart from the turgid and theory-laden text, the so-called 'you try it' exercises are next to useless. Not only are they of a magnitude more complex than the preceding examples, you have no idea if you have achieved the correct result. There aren't any answers! Let alone an explanation of how to get there.
Even though I am not entirely ignorant of the subject, I found this book confusing and unnecessarily difficult. An example -
"Let a < c < b... etc." Why? What's wrong with a < b < c ?
Then you don't have to perform mental gymnastics when trying to understand what follows.
Written by an academic, for academics. Unfortunately the star ratings don't allow a negative value which is what I wanted to apply. One star is the lowest I'm allowed.
I loathe this book. It could put someone off maths for life.

Calculus Further Mystified1
This book claims to be a self-teaching guide; it is nothing of the sort. I worked my through to half of chapter three before giving up. I thought I had a solid background in calculus from previous study and was just brushing up on the subject for the current academic year, but the text, examples and `You Try It' were totally mystifying and drain one of what little enthusiasm there is for this subject matter.

There is no background information in relation to calculus or its applications in science, so is not suitable as a primer for calculus.

As a previous reviewer has stated, if I could give it a negative mark I would.

I can only say, give this book a wide berth..........

Leave this one well alone.1
An almost impenetrable text on calculus. At least I think the book is about calculus, the title suggests it is, however the content fails to educate. For a book that is aimed at students with no prior knowledge of the subject it is poorly presented and the examples difficult to follow.

I can only suggest that the authors next book in this series should be "Calculus Demystified - demystified".

As a subject, calculus needs an introductory text which is both accessible and capable of dispelling the routine fear students have of the discipline. This text fails on both counts.
