Editorial Reviews

Review
"Outstanding, very informative & easy to read! This was the most informative book on building computers I have ever read, and I have read a few. I would recommend this book to anyone who was considering building a PC or who just wanted to see how they were put together, operate, and what you can do with them." -- Amazon reviewer

Popular Toolbox'inside front cover contains a list of equipment needed to build each project.
Includes a section on how computers work (Chapter 1, 'First Time Builders'), explaining motherboards, CPUs, RAM, etc. in plain English to help readers understand the intricacies of PCs so they can be better informed builders.

Also features chapters on installing an operating system and troubleshooting your machine.

    From the Author
A fully illustrated step-by-step guide for building ATX PCs
The main focus of this book is the heavily illustrated building section in which we full assemble a Slot 1 ATX PC (Pentium II and Celeron) and a Socket 7 ATX PC (AMD K6, AMD K6-2, Cyrix/IBM 6X86). There are over 130 hands-on photographs in the build sections, not just a collection of "identification" photos. You can follow along with the pictures for mounting the motherboard, attaching power leads, mounting heat sinks and CPUs, installing drives and adapters, even opening and closing the case is included.

The text includes a basic introduction to computer parts and terms for beginners, followed by a chapter for selecting parts and making purchasing decisions. A great deal of attention is given to the subject of costs and benefits. After the large assembly sections, the book concludes with a guide to installing Windows 98.

    Great Book - Recommended!5
This is a brilliant book for a novice computer builder. I am a Mac user who knows virtually nothing about PCs, so I thought it would be a nice idea to try to build one. This book starts from the very very basics, goes through in detail, every part, it's different kinds and ways that they all fit together. Once you have familirised yourself with all the parts the book then goes through a step by step build of three computers. I would highly recommend this book. The only down side is that all the pictures are black and white, and the quality of some of the pictures is very very poor. Well worth the Amazon price though. I read it from cover to cover, I have now bought all the parts and am ready to build. I will keep the book for reference.

    very useful...5
I had very little knowledge of PC building when I bought this book but I managed to build 2 full systems just by following the instructions. Both the AMD and Pentium walkthroughs are as accurate as they can be (not 100% because all PC componenets vary slightly). Also explains how to install an OS for those that have never done this before.

Some knowledge can be more dangerous than none!!2
This book is very basic and makes a whole load of generalisations. The illustrations are of very poor quality, and you'd be as well off without most of them. Also the book requires a bit of updating. It does provide some useful bits of info, but when you actually go to build your PC, you find out that you've missed out on loads of info...my advice if you buy this book, buy components with good manuals!
