Amazon.co.uk Review
Physical illness is often seen as something of an inevitability, something that could strike at any time without warning, leaving us at the mercy of doctors and drugs. Heart disease costs the US 200 billion dollars a year, their number one biggest killer and yet it is a condition that is largely preventable. Integrated medicine concentrates on your body's own power to keep itself healthy, encompassing a blend of conventional, complementary and traditional methods. Dr Ali Mosaraf has pioneered this approach to health and today runs the Integrated Medical Centre in London, the first of its kind in Europe. His clinic and his style of treatment have attracted a wide client base, many of them celebrities, through word of mouth recommendations, some of which are used in the introduction.

The Integrated Health Bible promises to open up Dr Ali's knowledge to a wider, but no doubt, equally appreciative audience. He introduces his theories by explaining where his ideas originated, the history of medicine and looking at how the body works. Self-help is central to his philosophy and he calls this truly holistic approach to health the "Lifestyle Programme". The three pillars of this encompass diet, exercise and massage, and equal emphasis is placed on meditation and relaxation in order to manage stress. Following the Lifestyle Programme is done with the goal of maintaining health, a case of prevention being much better, and cheaper, than cure. But the third part of the book deals with what to do when things go wrong. Common ailments are all here and treatments cover everything from stress, flu, backache to infertility. Strategies and solutions are also recommended for serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.

Throughout the information is comprehensive and Dr Ali's writing style compelling and easy to understand. He approaches his subject with vigour and clarity and rather than issuing directives, provides explanations of why things go wrong and what to we can actually do about it. The Integrated Health Bible is set to be an immensely valuable and significant book. Given the increasing stresses we place on our bodies and the restrictions of our current health service, the move towards self help and restoring our bodies natural capacity to heal and take care of itself is long overdue. In the capable, compassionate hands of Dr Ali a healthy future is almost guaranteed. --Rachel O'Connor

COMMENT ON THE INTEGRATED HEALTH BIBLE BY DR. MOSARAF ALI
My maternal grandfather, Dr. Abdul Hameed, was a conventional doctor who specialised in homeopathy and integrated the two systems of medicine. My early memories go back to those times when I used to watch him examine patients – looking at their tongue and eyes, feeling their pulse – before prescribing medicines. My favourite game as a toddler was to play doctor, imitating my grandfather. It was then my interest in folk medicine grew.

I went to a Christian Brothers’ boarding school which was run by Irish and Australian Brothers who were very strict but very committed to instilling the correct values in a boy. My dream to become a doctor was very strong and during the holidays I would spend hours in the United States Information Service Library in Calcutta reading books in psychology, physiology and anatomy. Rather a strange occupation for a 12 year old!

My university studies took me from Delhi to Moscow where the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Yuri Romashoff, was an eminent Soviet cardiac surgeon. He was deeply interested in fasting therapy, iridology, tongue diagnosis and yoga and encouraged students to study these subjects. Although I was interested I was determined to be a good general physician first and it was only after the completion of my MD studies that I turned my attention to these subjects. I became the first foreigner to be admitted to a postgraduate course at The Central Institute of Advanced Medical Studies where classified subjects like cosmic medicine, parapsychology and experimental medicine were studied.

Over the years, my studies and work have taken me around the world. After setting up my own Centre for Integrated Medicine in Hong Kong in 1989, I was invited to set up a department at the Hale Clinic in 1991. In 1992, by coincidence, I met Prince Charles at a reception and that meeting became a major turning point in my life. I knew then that Integrated Medicine, a name that I had created some 20 years ago, was to become a reality. I opened the Integrated Medical Centre in London in 1998 with a team of 15 doctors and therapists. It has now grown into a respectable medical institution catering to people from all walks of life, from both the UK and abroad.

I believe the time is now ripe to write about my philosophy, how I treat and prevent illnesses but above all about restoring health. I hope you enjoy reading it and practise what you learn.

The Common Cold

They say that medical science has made such great technological advances that a surgeon in London can remove the gall bladder of a patient in Sydney through telemedicine. Yet it has not been able to find a cure for r the common cold. Conventional medicine knows it is some sort of a virus so all one can do is hope for the body to heal on its own, as in flu. As mentioned earlier, the curing of the common cold on its own is a clear example of the sanogenetic powers or healing force of the body. The seven-day rule applies to this too. There is nothing a doctor can do to treat the virus, but the body has its own tactics for dealing with it.

The most important fact behind a common cold is that the body is always run down before it catches a cold. When you catch a 'chill' by exposure to cold air, air-conditioning, getting wet (especially in the head) and so on, the body's energy is wasted in warming it up. As a result of that there is an acute loss of the 'inner heat' and the body gears up its resources to compensate for that. This makes the immune system vulnerable. Opportunistic viruses, present in abundance in the air, then try to enter the body through the nasal passage where they begin to thrive.

In a defensive reaction the mucus in the nose increases to 'wash' the virus out. The wrestling match between the pathogenetic force (the virus) and the sanogenetic powers (shown in the mucus discharge) is in fill swing. In most cases the body wins and the virus is eliminated. If the body loses the virus penetrates deeper into the throat, sinuses and lungs, causing inflammation of these organs. There is however, no fever as in flu.

Treatment

The most sensible thing to do in this case is to help the body to eliminate the virus. Stopping the cold with antihistamine or nasal sprays that constrict blood vessels to stop fluid filtering through them, is not a good idea, however convenient it might be for the patient. Here are some tips on treatment.

Diet Avoid the following: Cold water or chilled drinks (warm drinks like herbal tea or warm water help to eliminate the cold) Dairy products - they increase mucus production Fungal products - mushrooms and cheese

Try the following Ginger and black pepper tea Boil a few slices of fresh ginger with a pinch of black pepper for four to five minutes. Add a few drops of lemon and drink with a little organic honey. Anit-cold soup Chop onion, ginger, leek a bit of garlic and some potatoes. Boil these in water for 20-25 minutes. Add a bit of mustard paste, black pepper, salt and a few drops of lemon. (You can also use fresh chicken stock or bone marrow stock to prepare this soup.) Drink it twice a day. After drinking this soup your body will warm up and you might sweat in the forehead. Brandy with honey A teaspoon of brandy and honey in a cup of warm water at bedtime is useful.

Other treatments Nose drops Sniff equal quantities of mustard and pure sesame oils or use Dr Ali's sinus oil. Put one drop of this mixture of oils in each nostril and sniff up. Do this twice a day. Mustard has a powerful antibacterial property and possibly some antiviral property. High does of vitamin C 500mg, two to three times a day for five days Homoeopathic remedies See a physician or try Ferrum phos, Aconite 30 or Gelsemium 30. Take one tablet three times a day for three days.

Prognosis

If the cold is treated as soon as it starts (with sneezing or a running nose) then the secondary complications (sinusitis, pharyngitis) do not set in. It is good to have a cold every now and then. It gives you a chance to pay attention to your body.

Care about yourself? Then read this book.5
I read the excerpts from the Mail on Sunday magazine which prompted me to buy the book. I have not been disappointed. I have found it particularly helpful as a woman regarding PMS. At 41 it has taken a serious illness to motivate me to 'care about myself' properly for the first time in my life. This book has been my 'bible' for the past few months. It's a long road to recovery but it is full of hope because of this book.

inspiring,empowering5
I am very impressed with Dr Ali's philosophy towards health as he encourages the public to regain control and responcibility for their own health and advises them how to do this . Working as a nurse in an nhs trust i have become dissolusioned with the health care provided which seems to be more geared to promoting a culture of illness and dependency on the nhs rather than promoting wellbeing or empowering individuals to become more aware of their own bodys and take responcibility for ones own health needs

Concise & 'comforting' combo of health & lifestyle info.5
The arrival of this book was eagerly awaited by myself and a number of close acquaintances and it fulfilled all of our hopes.

The information it contains is not only easy to read and therefore understand, but is also clear and 'obvious' - if only I had always been as aware of my complete self, as Dr Ali's advice has now made me.

As you read each chapter, you feel like you are unlocking information that has been stored away for centuries in your 'old' brain.

I am embarking on intergrating my health and would recommend that people of either sex, all ages and states of health give Dr Ali's words of wisdom a chance. It could make ALL the difference to you. It certainly has to me.
