sumptuous
I am going to have to split this review into two: style and content. Physically this is a wonderful book, really first class, from its matt-black dust sleeve, its reassuring weight, its very thick paper and sumptuous colour photographs placed centrally on the page. This book reeks of quality. I still enjoy dipping into a now and then to look at the pictures and skim the text. However... this is a coffee table book and not a scholarly text and you have to decide which you want. Ellis is well qualified, but there is no bibliography, no references and the "suggestions of further reading" are mainly more of Ellis' work. The content is adequate enough, though with quite an emphasis on etymology, which is distracting for this type of book. If you know only vague things about the Celts, the splendour of the book captures the spirit of the glorious Celts and you will be hooked. If you know a lot already, it may not add enough to your knowledge to be satisfying. It is still a book I like to keep around, despite the fact that I have marked it down for the reasons above.
