All you need to build powerful, sophisticated ActiveX controls right now!
Get a head start on programming with Visual Basic 5.
Right now, no Microsoft technology is more important than ActiveX, the successor to OLE. ActiveX is Microsoft's key building block for the Internet, Intranets and the Active Platform. And with the Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition, Microsoft has delivered everything you need to create powerful ActiveX controls—all for free. Everything, that is, except documentation.
That's where this book comes in. Written by a member of Microsoft's Visual Basic development team and an award-winning VB expert, it tells you everything Microsoft hasn't. This book not only lets any experienced programmer create full blown ActiveX controls. It lets users of previous versions master many of the new technologies that will be used in the forthcoming full version of Visual Basic 5. You will start by learning the fundamentals of programming with the VB5 Control Creation (CCE), including VB5's increasingly sophisticated object-oriented techniques. Walk through every element of the CCE development environment, including its new intelligent code editor, forms engine and interactive debugger. Take full advantage of the Control Interface Wizard to streamline ActiveX control development. And discover:
- Techniques for adapting existing controls to your own needs.
- Powerful templates you can use to build your own controls.
- VB5 property pages, which make it easy to set control properties.
- Proven methods for testing, debugging and deploying ActiveX controls.
Then, step-by-step, create ActiveX controls that deliver powerful capabilities—with just a fraction of the work that would have been needed in C++. Build controls that:
- Deliver all of Visual Basic's powerful financial functions to the Web.
- Provide a full-fledged universal calendar for your users.
- Create more sophisticated labels, text boxes and option button groups.
You even get the complete Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition on CD-ROM—along with dozens of sample controls.
If you're an experienced programmer in any language, and you need to leverage the power of ActiveX controls now, this is the one book you must own.
The first book in Prentice Hall PTR's ActiveX Series.
Customer Reviews
Helpful but a bit basic
A very informative text, seems to focus tightly on a few main topics while bypassing others which should have been covered.
Don't do it!
Most of the book is about the VB IDE and a lot of the rest is about standard VB code. The sample controls are simplistic. You'd be better off using the online help and code samples that come with VB5.
