Customer Reviews

These books are a triumph5
I love the wit and snobbery of these novels. Mapp and Lucia are the most machiavellian pair of genteel ladies ever to grace the pages of a novel. Their constant one-upmanship and cat fighting is a source of great delight to me and the absurdity of the social situation is highlighted by the wonderfully bizarre and outlandish situations they get themselves into. I would float to sea on an upturned kitchen table with Lucia at the helm any day.

Falling to bits5
My copy of this and its companion Lucia Rising are falling to bits re-read and re-read- they remain hilarious even if you know exactly what is coming next. Whether hoarding for a coal strike , trying to become mayor or the strange disappearance of blue birdie you will be hooked.

Small town pretensions satirised5
Some of the finest satirical creations of all time. The characters are not static and their development over the several novels is startling at times, with the relationships between the characters developing to their finest hours in the three books in Mapp and Lucia. Prose lampoons at their finest. (As is their portrayal in the Channel 4 TV series by Geraldine McEwan, Prunella Scales and Nigel Hawthorne, ably supported by a host of others in what is probably best described as the highest thespian 'jam session' ever.
