A great retelling of the Trojan War
This was the first MZB book I ever read, and it is still one of my favorites. With better characterization than most of her works, I found myself empathizing with Kassandra and others. It also wasn't as slow as The Mists of Avalon, and since I've read Virgil's Aeneid, which includes the Fall of Troy, it was interesting to see how close she came to the original text.
Amazing!
If you like this, you will be stunned by Homer's epic poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey"... I read "The Firebrand" whilst studying those, and they complimented each other very well. With the passing of MZB, we lost a great writer, but with each reading of one of her stories, we honour and remember her and her worlds. Bravo!
Fantastic historical detail
As in 'The Mists of Avalon', MZB takes historical legend (in this case, the 'Iliad') and fleshes it out, turning her attention to the details of the lives of the characters. All the action is here - the contests, the battles, the kingmaking - but so are the characters' personal lives. In particular, Bradley focuses on the experiences of the female characters, who do not receive much attention in historical sources. The book is rich with minutely-researched historical detail about how these people would have lived, and in combining this with pacy narrative, Bradley has really cooked up a treat in 'The Firebrand'.
