Average customer review:Product Description
A tragi-comedy of manners acted out almost entirely within the walls of a small pension or boarding house in late 19th century Paris, which is run by an appalling Dutch couple. The novel consists of a series of cameo scenes that are both funny and cruel.

Editorial Reviews
Ham and High
'Packed with bizarre incidents and even more bizarre characters…black, certainly, but brilliantly comic as well. A rough-cut gem’
Martin Seymour-Smith
'Elsschot is full of subtle feeling and his style is highly economical and lucid...a sophisticated, parodic, tender realist of genius'
Customer Reviews
Great early 20th century Flemish literature
This book to me is Elsschot's first masterpiece. It is often hilarious and once you start reading, you cannot put it down. Commemorable scenes and great fun.
