Disappointingly bleak collection
I'm afraid I didn't really enjoy this collection, even though, being a lover of short stories, I was looking forward to reading it. The general ambience is too bleak and very much in the post-modern genre without any unifying logic. I struggled to complete the work and wonder if this is because the individual stories just don't "gel" in any sensible way.
That said, there are the odd delights here and there which make the reading journey more palatable, such as Will Self's "A Short History of the English Novel" (which is surely the best and most intelligent offering of this collection) and Nick Hornby's "Faith", which is immensely satisfying. For those 2 alone, it's probably worth borrowing, but possibly not buying.
Good fun!
I'm not really a fan of reading short stories but I came across this book in Portabello market and it grabbed my attention for some reason. It's a very easy light read with a diverse range of stories from some now very famous authors - some funny, sad and trashy. A good read!
