Good satire- slow at the start but wait for the end
Waugh's social satires are always amusing and sometimes sad to read. This story doesn't get moving until tradgedy hits around half way through but if you hang on till that then the rest of the book will be a pleasure. The end twist is very unexpected and somewhat chilling.
What seems to come out from this book is a sense of these privelidged upper class bores using misfortune of others to boost their social standing. Very entertaining even if none of the characters are remotely likable.
A true classic
I first read this book many years ago at the tender age of 13 and it was my favourite book then and still remains by favourite 12 years later. It is a classic story which keeps you totally involved with all the characters and is very thought provoking, the story starts with one character as the central role and then gently and gradually switches to two others. At the end I always wish that times didn't change so much but it is still very true of how life really is and I would recommend it to anybody, a true classic
