It was the custom for lads to gather at the street corner on summer evenings and discuss trolleying. Spit Nolan was the champion trolley-rider. He had very good balance, sharp wits and he was very brave. The dramatic story of Spit Nolan is one of thirteen in this collection of funny and stirring tales set in the 1930s. With warmth and vigour, Bill Naughton describes the good-humoured exploits of a lively group of boys.

A FINE READ - WELL WORTH DIPPING INTO!
A GOOD READ - SHORT STORIES THAT FOCUS ON CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES - BUT WHERE IS NAUGHTON'S CLASSIC 'MY PAL SPADGER' THIS BOOK IS THE ULTIMATE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE BOOK AND SHOULD BE REPRINTED IMMEDIATELY!
Short sharp, and to the point
"The Goalkeeper's Revenge" is a collection of short stories, set in England in the 60s or 70s. The title story is that of a handicapped boy who overcomes his difficulties and his enemy with his talent for soccer goalkeeping. The ending is spot on.Most of the other stories follow the same formula. "Spit Nolan" is a touching story about carting and another disadvantaged boy. Like so much children's writing, this is over sentimental and far too short. However, these stories are witty and clever, and will make you laugh and cry.
Reasons for starting a family number 1
Wondering whether or not to have children? Undecided as to whether your life is ready for this big step? Help is at hand - buy this book and read Bill Naughton's haunting, magical series of stories. Now picture yourself reading said stories to your youngster as you put them to bed.
If you don't envisage this scenario as being utterly, utterly wonderful then you're not ready for kids yet.
One of the greatest collections of children's stories ever written, recalling times and places from our past where the pace of life was so different from the hectic world we rush around in today. Being the age I am, I never experienced these times and places for myself, but with this book I can easily imagine I did. Vastly underrated and unappreciated, this collection should be as essential to a library of childhood literature as anything by Rackham, Blyton, Milne et al.
Thanks Bill.
