One of the best children's books - ever
What a sensational children's book!
This was my children's book at bedtime last week, and I have not had them so enthused by a book for ages. From the front cover to the last page, they (and I) were gripped by the story of George, the boy whose parents are too busy to look after him during the summer holidays. He ends up with his Auntie who lives at the seaside, and over time he realises that all is not what it seems.
Beautifully written, this book is a delight to read aloud; the quirky characters and exciting decriptive prose give you plenty to get stuck into, and each of the fifteen chapters ends with a cliff-hanger.
I'd suggest that the book is suitable for 5 to 12 year olds, although I am 40 and can't wait to get the other Susan Gates books!
Warning: not for the squeamish!
Mum is going to Cornwall; Dad is at a conference in Brussels, what will George do? There is no one to look after him but then his mum thinks of his dad's aunt who only visited once when he was little but she remembers him as a plump old lady able to change colour. She seemed quite friendly. When George stays with his Aunt Primrose during the holidays, certain doubts start to creep into his mind. She keeps things in the cellar and George could swear he saw her early in the morning before the tide came in and she went into the sea and didn't come out for about 5 minutes! What is going on? Find out in this book. I would rate this book 8/ 10 because it is good but bits could be improved and would recommend it to adventure loving 8 - 12 year olds, mainly boys.
