The Church of Scotland's soon-to-be-replaced hymn book
The Church Hymnary (Third Edition) is often known as "CH3". It is the official hymn book of the Church of Scotland and also used by some other Reformed Churches in the British Isles. It is a careful composition of hymns, mostly traditional and dignified. On a positive side, it does contain hymns which reflect the Christian year and are inherently doxological. But this book is now very dated and was even subject to quite a lot of criticism when first published in 1973. "Inclusive language" is conspicuous by its absence. Not surprisingly, most Church of Scotland congregations use a second hymn book in addition to CH3. There are very few hymns suitable for today's children. The Church of Scotland is working on a replacement, due out in 2003.
