This is the history of the rise and fall of united Germany, which lasted only 75 years from its establishment by Bismark in 1870, and ended in the rubble of Hitler's regime. Gordon Craig not only analyses the political structures of and the foreign, social, and economic policies of successive governments, but also examines the individuals who dominated the period and the important intellectual and cultural influences at work. His fascinating chapter on the rich diversity of Weimar culture - Mann and Hesse, Marlene Deitrich and film, Brecht, Schonberg, Expressionist art, and the growth of psychoanalytic theory - is proof enough that this is not an ordinary history book.

Good and broad survey of German History since 1866
This is a comprehensive book about the rise and fall of the German Reich from 1866 to 1945. It starts in 1866 (the victory against the Austrian Empire which manifested Prussian dominance over the Austrian Habsburg Empire) and spawns over the
unification of Germany after the war against France in 1870/71, the years of Bismarck'ian diplomacy, WWI, the Weimar Republic and Great Depression, the rise of the National Socialist party until the final defeat an partition of the German Reich in 1945.
The book covers all aspects of interest (economics, culture etc.) and gives a broad introductory survey of the topic. If you are interested in the history of Germany I can only recommend this book (along with the "The History of Germany Since 1789" from Golo Mann, son of Thomas Mann)!
Good book on an interesting topic!
