Review
OUP goes from strength to strength with its Choral Classics catalogue. With a huge repertoire, ranging from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries from which to choose, Clifford Bartlett has clearly spent a great deal of time and effort, not only in selecting what to include, but also what to exclude . . . All of this in one volume, bound and presented in the excellent format which we have come to know and expect from OUP. What more can I say, except "More please". Very highly recommended. Useful and well chosen anthology
The oxford choral classic's "European Sacred Music" is one the must-have staples for choirs. This companion volume of secular works suffers a little by comparison, partly at least because there are fewer performance opportunities for this type of relatively short piece and the subject matter is, by its nature, perhaps more diverse and less profound. Nonetheless this collection has been put together with great care and contains many works that will reward exploration and performance. As usual for this series, the editing and layout of music and text is first-rate. So while not as essential as the ESM, still a worthy addition to any choral library (and excellant value for money).
