A very well designed English course for beginners
English File 1 is an innovative and well-designed course in elementary English. It covers the same kind of material as other elementary courses, but English File 1 has several features which I really liked.

Firstly, the way that the book introduces phonetic symbols through colourful mnemonic pictures is a really creative and attractive way to overcome students' terrors of these funny-looking letters.

Secondly, the material in the book is fun. There are a lot of songs, and games, and the book can be used very successfully even with less motivated and able students, where something like Headway Elementary would be heavy going.

Thirdly, there is a lot of great back-up material for the course. The whole thing seems to have been designed really well.

Although it is described as an adult course on the covers, the book is particularly good for young people.

I strongly recommend people teaching elementary classes to consider trying `English File 1'.

Useful even if you don't teach the course.
This book is essential for anyone who has to teach the English File 1 course. It has great lesson plans which really work for each of the files in the coursebook. On top of that, it's also useful for people who are looking for resources, because it has more than sixty pages of photocopiable activities. The lesson plans in this book are really super, and the advice and help it gives you, the level of detail, the games, and the super photocopiable activities are each worth at least the price of the book. At last a teacher's book which isn't a half-hearted lazy effort, but something which actually saves the teacher's time and makes life much easier. Great!
