The best course for teenagers I know
I have been using Hotline for nearly ten years in an International School. I find it effective both as a whole class course and for individualised learning involving some self-study. Although I could quibble about the excessive reliance on grammatical technology and find the new Hotline cassettes less effective than the old (it is really inappropriate to have all the readings read aloud when a main point is the development of skimming and scanning techniques) I applaud the selection of material and variety of approaches. In themselves these add up to an excellent teacher training course and we use Hotline to help teachers of mainstream subjects understand how they can adapt their materials to the needs of ESL students. A post-intermediate and advanced course would also be welcome.
Our school struck gold
This book is meant for teen-agers but my college-aged students also loved it. For the first time in their lives, English came alive. They love the Victoria Road Soap Opera (None of us have ever seen the students skip ahead in their books before!) and the songs, they were fascinated by the section on pronounciation. The best thing about this book is that it changes pace every twenty minutes or so, so the students are never given a chance to space out. Tom Hutchinson has become idol to all of us in the English Department. Our one and only wish, that he continue to series for upper-intermediate and advanced students, that he write a series for kids and for adults, that he be made high priest of ESL.
