monotonous and redundant
Not a book that I would have chosen for an adult night-school course. The points of grammar are appropriate but the manner in which they are presented is uninteresting and unnecessarily drawn-out. Some of the chapter topics are interesting for adult learners but the majority are intended for a younger audience.

Competent text for intermediate students
This is a rather long book for an intermediate course. The readings are very stodgy, not much interest for students in the age range 15 to 20. Really a better choice is the new OUP English File 3. Students that I have taken through this course have complianed of monotony and of the length of the exercises, the course also lacks interactive speaking content. Furthermore this course is very difficult to cover in the 4 hours per week timetabled classes of the average academy.

Still among the best.
The content of this old favourite is still particularly relevant for Esol students today. The topics are interesting and the progression through the subject is logical. Although aimed at classroom teaching I have used the course succesfully on a 1 to 1 basis with little modification.

If you only ever buy one intermediate course book, let it be this one.
