Groundbreaking
One of the first put that diverted scholarly attention from Plautus' adaptation techniques to his literary and theatrical merits as an autonomous object of study. Segal relies heavily on a Freudian approach to Comedy, which now seems decidedly dated, as well as a rather schematic view of the differences between Greek and Roman societies. His idea, nonetheless, that Greek comedies represented an anti-Rome, which helped as a locus of subversion, albeit momentarily, is extremely interesting, although one would wish that it were more politicised, as far as imperialist culture and the appropriation of Greek paideia is concerned.
