Customer Reviews
Indispensable
This most recent work from McGrail is quite simply indispensable if you are interested in the global origins of watercraft. In clear, largely jargon-free language, he meticulously analyses a vast range of data for boats and ships from across the world, from Prehistory to the late Middle Ages. Where confusion was present before, he clarifies. Where data is missing, he finds ways to fill these gaps with realistic hypotheses. The book is referenced superbly and, although pricey, is beatifully presented and bound. My copy is already littered with post-it notes marking key sections and never leaves my desk. A gem.
