A Masterpiece
I love every sentence of this book and have used it for a good few years now as my standard text for this fascinating and tumultuous age. Certainly Ensor's account has dated - it was first published in 1936 - and his Liberal bias is a little too apparent in his treatment of Salisbury; but there are very few historians who have the insight he so effortlessly displays as well as his gift for crystal clear exposition of very complex material.
Ultimately, this book probably doesn't ticks enough boxes now to be considered a definitive account of England between 1870 and 1914. But as a magnificently written overview it is still without equal.
