Review
"Throughout, Austin's characteristic sensitivity and refined judgement combine with careful scholarship to present a balanced, sound commentary on this most difficult and crucial book of Virgil's epic poem."--The Classical World
"Virgilian studies in England were raised to a new plane with the publication of R.G. Austin's commentary on Aeneid II (1964)....Austin's contribution to our understanding of the Aeneid now stands comparison with Heinze's or Norden's."--Journal of Roman Studies

Essential for students of the Aeneid
Austin is excellent in his thorough commentary on Aeneid Liber Secundus. Note that the synopsis is incorrect, this book is the second of the twelve not the fourth. Vergil's original text is included (I am not sure which of A, B etc. versions it is) and this is very useful as one can neatly store it in one's pocket for study whether on the tube, in a garden, or anywhere indeed and be able to read the commentary on it at the same time. It is also amusing in some parts, Austin refers to his favourite 'curva vallis' and to a survey carried out by a Michigan lumberjack! I cannot recommend it more.
