Paul Langford is Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, and has been a Professor of Modern History at Oxford since 1996. Amongst his numerous publications are A Polite and Commercial People: English 1727-83 and Englishness Identified: Manner and Character, 1650-1850.

A good introductory volume
This volume is a good entry point to approach various aspects of 18th-century Britain.
As can be seen from the table of contents available above, the author deals with the subject matter in thematic chapters, rather than along a chronological frieze. This is especially valuable for a non-specialist seeking an overall synthesis on a specific topic in the period.
