German song in the nineteenth century offers some of the greatest pleasures available to the singer, pianist, and listener. The great German poets - Goethe, Schiller, Rückert, Eichendorff, Heine, Mörike, Hesse, and many lesser figures - inspired such perennial masterpieces as Schubert's song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, Schumann's Dichterliebe, and Mahler's Die Kindertotenlieder. This book provides the German texts of the most frequently studied and performed songs, and gives literal, word-for-word translations under each line, plus clear English prose versions of each poem. Neither is a singing version, but each contributes to the understanding and appreciation of the song. The composers represented are Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, and Richard Strauss. This new edition includes numerous corrections and improvemenbts to the translations.

Customer Reviews
The bible for all singers of German Lieder.
Lieder Line by Line provides a comprehensive collection of the poetry used in German Lieder with a literal translation of the text in english. It is a God send, because it provides the singer with a full understanding of the german text, as well as the correct grammatical cases - translated into the english language. I have several other books with translations of lieder, but they aren't literal translations, and in some cases, do not provide the singer with an accurate translation (including tenses). As a useful tool for a singer, it is to be very highly recommended...
Essential accompanists' resource
A very valuable resource for accompanists, who need to know exactly what each word means. I wouldn't be without it.
