Political, social, and economic factors are integrated in this book, the two themes of which are the political and constitutional effects of rapid inflation and the difficulties caused by the universal desire to achieve and enforce religion in a theologically divided country.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Provides by far the best consecutive account of parliamentary politics during this crucial decade. Russell's superb control of his sources is immediately apparent....[A] magnificent book. (American Historical Review )
Customer Reviews
A brilliant book, elegantly argued and lucidly written.
Russell manages to take a complicated and chaotic period of English history and bring it to life. His thinking has become the accepted orthodoxy on the subject. Taught me more about the struggle between Charles I and his Parliament than all the other books I have read put together. Helped me get a First.
