Pompeii
I received the book and read it in two days. Having just completed GCSE Archaeology (mature student) and embarking on GCSE Classic Civilisations I found this book great and easy to read.
The book was a good account of life in Pompeii before the eruption - part fact and part fiction.
I liked the research on Pliny the elder and younger - and also the Aquaducts systems.
Good read.
Great Book for Beginners
Pompeii probably stands as one of the greatest cities of the Classical world. In many ways it is more fascinating than Athens or Rome, because so much of its buildings were preserved following the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. It is often said that Pompeii is a city trapped in time.
Peter Connolly, an expert at historical reconstructions, has written this almost perfect little book for children, interested adults and the layperson. Filled with Connolly's brilliant reconstructive paintings, it shows us the daily lives of the people before the city was destroyed.
Connolly tells us the story of Pompeii, from the cities origins to its destruction as well as the story of how the archaeologists recovered it.
Along the way, Connolly shows us the make-up of the city, it's walls, buildings, gardens, amphitheatre, baths, shops and streets. In every section he provides his reconstructions, from scenes of gladiatorial combat, to aerial-views of fulleries and launderers, pots and pans, aqueducts and construction techniques.
Maps and modern photographs of the site helps put these reconstructive paitnings in their context.
Connolly's book is accessible and readable, and is aimed at just about everybody. If you have an interest in Pompeii then this book would make a great introduction to the subject. Highly recommended!
Super Little Book
Having just visited Pompeii for a 2 hour trip I was keen to read about what I had just photographed. I bought this book for my 14 year old son and another more substantial volume for myself. It is so well illustrated however I felt compelled to read it. The reconstruction diagrams and description really bring the place alive in a way that is hard to achieve by visiting the site alone. The only other way to do this is to visit the national archaeological museum in Naples. (At present rates of exchange is is cheaper to buy the book).
This book is an excellent way to get started on the subject of Pompeii both for adults wanting a very quick read and for interested children.
If you can read it before you visit.
