Product Description

Delivering the facts to your fingertips, the Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine provides an accessible and comprehensive, signs-and-symptoms-based source of information on medical problems commonly seen in the tropics. A handy guide which can fit in the coat pocket and be used easily at the bedside, it has been designed to be as practical as possible with illustrations of blood films and stool smears, which are useful for diagnosis, as well as clinical features, diagnosis, and management. Medical conditions are ordered by system except for the five major tropical conditions - malaria, HIV/STIs, tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, and acute respiratory infections - and fevers. In this new edition the sections on malaria, cardiology, chest medicine, gastroenterology, mental health and dermatology have undergone major revision, and there is new material on altitude sickness, heat stroke, avian flu and fuller poisoning. There is a greater emphasis on paediatric medicine and public health throughout, and new illustrations and photographs have been included to aid with diagnosis. Small enough to throw in your rucksack, this unique handbook is the ultimate quick reference guide for all those working in the tropics.

Editorial Reviews

Review
The information given is in a concise format, with consistent presentation that helps the readers build up their knowledge in tropical medicine... this handbook is a good source of information and its cost is not prohibitive. Dr Georg Kassianos, Travel Wise A strong point of the handbook is its range of practical protocols developed by the World Health Organization. These allow a structured approach to patient care and can be adapted to national policies and local conditions, used for easy reference, and disseminated appropriately. John Hartley, University College London Hospital, on eBMJ The handbook delivers the facts to your fingertips... if I had 425g of luggage allowance to spare... I would throw it in my rucksack! Customer Reviews

Very, very useful4
I've just been away in Africa and this was the best purchase I made before I went out. It has everything you need for tropical disease from the symptoms through diagnosis and treatment. It has extensive chapters in malaria and HIV and others. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Tropical medicine5
This book is good to have if you work as a doctor in the tropics. It contains a lot of information cooked down to a minimum, just what you need to have in your pocket.

Great book for electives in the tropics5
I took this book to India on my elective. If you only take one book on your elective - take this one! It covers all of the common conditions found in the tropics in a clear and concise manner and doesn't weigh your bag down.
