The Architectural Drawings of Magdalen College: A Catalogue
|
Product Description
The architectural drawings of Magdalen College, Oxford number some thousand items and make up a collection unparalleled at any other Oxford or Cambridge college. They span three centuries, from the early eighteenth century to the present day, and contain many beautiful contributions from some of the great names of English architecture including Nicholas Hawksmoor, James Wyatt, John Nash, Humphry Repton, A. W. N. Pugin, and leading members of the Scott dynasty. This is the first comprehensive catalogue of the collection, lavishly illustrated in both colour and black and white. It is prefaced by a detailed introductory essay by Roger White which sets the drawings in their context, and provides an overview of the architectural evolution of this most famously picturesque of Oxford colleges. The catalogue has been compiled with the assistance of Robin Darwall-Smith, Archivist, Magdalen College.

Editorial Reviews
Review
The illustrations are the undoubted triumph of this book. The drawings are stunningly photographed, mainly by John Gibbons, and immaculately reproduced. There is a generosity at work here, in the number of illustrations and in the quality ... the book is both scholarly and sumptuous. (Journal of the Society of Archivists )
