Cheshire, Fifoot & Furmston's Law of Contract stands as one of the classic textbooks on contract law more than 50 years after the publication of the first edition. Michael Furmston combines an authoritative account of the principles of the law of contract with thought-provoking analysis and insights, and the clarity of the narrative brings understanding of complex contractual issues to a wider readership. Each topic is clearly signposted for ease of navigation, and the text contains numerous references to additional primary and secondary sources to take the reader even further into the subject. The text is invaluable to students reading courses in contract, the law of obligations, and common law. It is also of real use to students of other disciplines needing a clear overview of the law of contract, and is often used as a first point of reference for practitioners. Customer Reviews
Contains the facts, shame its too hard to read.
This was the recommended textbook for my contract module, so I expected our lecturer had picked something accessible and concise. Wrong. The author writes in self-indulgent prose, which yes, whilst eloquent and fancy, completely misses the point. Its a textbook, it should be there to get the points across in an easy to understand way.
Its target audience is supposedly students, yet as a student I find it a real struggle to make sense of the book. It uses fancy but completely unnecessary language, and quite alot of Latin. I cannot speak Latin, therefor have to sit with the Oxford Dictionary, a latin dictionary, oh and did I mention the legal terms aren't well explained either so add a legal dictionary too.
Now I will give this book some praise, the points made are good and there is probably all the facts you need, but finding them is just a nightmare, so for that reason I have to give it only 2 stars.
Superb - with Knobs On
This is a superb account written by one of the country's leading authorities on contract law, Michael Furmston, Emeritus Professor of Law at Bristol. A lucid account of the law is now prefaced by an historical introduction to contract that will help students better understand why contract law today is the way it is, and written by the living god of legal history, Brian Simpson.
Law books just don't get better than this.
Heavy going
This was a recommended textbook by ILEX on the Level 6 Contract module. It depends what you buy this book for - if its to fill out your knowledge and understanding of contract law over and above that given by your student manuals, then this is great for putting many areas of case law and doctrines into context but make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to read it on top of your standard course work because its very long winded. If you want it as a revision aid, don't bother. You would be better off buying Unlocking Contract Law by Chris Turner for that which is much more concise and to the point.
