The Oxford Specialist Handbook of Urological Surgery is a comprehensive textbook of urological surgical technique, designed specifically for the trainee urological surgeon, whether he or she intends to be an office-based urologist, or a specialist urology surgeon. It provides an in-depth description of all aspects of urological surgery, with a step-by-step approach on how to perform urological operations. The reader is taken through simple procedures such as cystoscopy, J stent insertion and bladder biopsy, through to more complex surgery such as cystectomy and PCNL. It describes indications for surgery, diagnostic work-up, surgical technique, routine post-operative care together with the approach to management of complications of urological surgery. The trainee urologist will find it an invaluable source of information, particulary as a last minute reminder of how to perform a particular operation.

Review from Urology News, Sep/Oct 2009, Vol 13, No 6
The Oxford Handbook series has long been an essential part of a doctor's arsenal. This handy reference is designed to pass on a wealth of top tips accrued by an expert panel of surgeons over many years. While it is very suitable as a book to refer to in between cases, it has sufficient detail to act as a definitive surgical text.
The authors start by covering the essential points regarding patient preparation, equipment and incisions before progressively building a logical approach to each operation in turn. Clear diagrams are provided to help understand the approaches described, along with pertinent radiological and photographic images. Various methods of performing some operations are proposed, reflecting differences in teaching and personal preference. Surgical safety is obviously paramount and sufficient focus is placed on providing high quality care, warning of potential pitfalls and ways of coping with problems and complications. With reduced exposure to various emergencies and rare procedures, this book provides a means of giving trainees more confidence in performing procedures that they feel poorly prepared for, particularly when starting a consultant post. Simple, practical issues that are often overlooked are comprehensively covered and the indications for offering various treatments discussed. The pros and cons of alternative options are considered and a useful evidence base provided. This book also covers essential physiology and a section on tissue transfer, male factor fertility and paediatrics, which trainees may have little exposure to. There is also a separate section on legal matters, with advice on how to avoid ending up in court. This book complements the general urology text published in the same series and is an invaluable aid to operative urology. It is good value and deserves to be an essential training aid.
