Customer Reviews
A very thorogh introduction to operations management
I am using this text as part of a course on Operations Management - it was written primarily, I should think, for MBA courses and the like. So, while there are doubtless other books that go into more detail on certain aspects, it gives a comprehensive overview, backed up by many case studies and a CD with more materials, self-tests etc.
The authors, all of whom are associated with top-rated Warwick Busness School (WBS), take a holistic approach to operations management - it is not just about manufacturing operations but extends to operations in the core processes of service industries and to support processes - marketing, sales, finance, HRM, etc - in all types of business. (Many of the case studies are about service industries.) Design, delivery, development and direction of operations are covered. Almost all managers, Slack et al argue, are operations managers to some extent.
This is an excellent book, and one that would, I think, be useful in astand-alone way for those who don't have the luxury of following a course on the subject. If you are involved in managing any kind of process, and haven't had any formal training, then it is worth reading this book. If you are anything like me, just the first couple of chapters, covering such subjects as the "4Vs" and "operations performance objectives" will provide a simple, helpful framework for matters that you probably instinctively understand already.
