The Fire & The Clay - review
A thoughtful book about priestly training. What it is, what it should be, and what sort of priest we might see at the end of it.
It is not all-encompassing and doesn't claim to be, but through a series of discursive essays, each starting with an illustrative example, this book explores something of the role and nature of priesthood, and how best priests should be formed in order for them to become fully the people that God wants them to be, not merely to equip them with a set of multi-functional people- and administrative- skills. It comes down firmly on the side of a formation within a community, not part time training but total submersion in theological life within a praying community. This is understandably favoured as a way of formation since the main contributors to the book are members of the Community of the Resurrection, a monastery in Mirfield,Yorkshire. Having said that, the book is neither out-of-touch nor unfairly biased but simply puts a strong case for full time, college-community based priestly training. It definitely overturns a view that some may hold, that full-time training is unrealistic or out-of-touch.
