Cassell's Dictionary of Modern German History5
This book has been an absolute lifesaver throughout all of my German History courses. It gives, in alphabetical order (generally in english, occasionally german too), a short reference to just about everything you could possibly need to know. I have used this book as a background knowledge tool, and for writing my essays - it has helped me with Auschwitz, Ludwig Erhard and many, many more topics, by giving the simple facts that you normally have to look everywhere for. I recommend it to everyone.
