Product Description

Here is the extraordinary story of the Jewish people over the last hundred years: a saga of migration, unprecedented achievement, and the building of a new nation - as well as repression, persecution and mass murder. The renowned historian Martin Gilbert describes events and figures both inspirational and tragic: the immigrant waves that flowed out of Europe to Palestine and America; the writers, composers and performers who enthralled millions; the scientists, judges and intellectuals who contributed so much to humanity; the horrors of genocide; the renewal of community in America and Israel and throughout the Diaspora. The orthodox, the secular, the peoples gathered from the ends of the earth, all figure in this vivid portrait of the Jewish people at the dawn of the 21st century. Martin Gilbert's text - filled with the human detail that brings history to life - is brilliantly illustrated by hundreds of powerful photographs, many of them unpublished.

Customer Reviews

Excelent, recomended both for the photographer and historian5
Excelent! This book is a collection of photographs of the jewish life in the 20th century. However it is a history book as well, containing all the important moments of the jewish people throughout these years, from the gradual rise of anti-semitism to the State of Israel and its many wars.
In that way it is a neat and easy to read history book with all the appropriate illustration (photographs), and I believe it is of great value to anyone that would like to know about jewish history and wants something that is easy to read and helps picturing what is written.
As a photography book it is brilliant, the photographs cover most aspects of jewish life. The photographs are not artistic per se,they are there to give a vivid image of the history written in the book and that they achieve.
Overally I believe that it is a book that gives a thorough picture of jewish history in the 20th century, presented in a stimulating and touching way.
