Powerful and elegantly written overview of a tragic battle
If your view of this battle is dominated by the 1976 film 'A Bridge Too Far', then this fine book will act as a gentle corrective to many embedded myths. Harvey moves easily between the grand strategic overview and the horrific experiences of the soldiers involved, but centres his study on the quality of battlefield command and the relative abilities of the two armies to improvise when hastily drawn-up plans went wrong.
Middlebrook's 'Arnhem 1944' is better for battlefield experiences, but this is an elegant and highly effective study of a resonant battle. The author is objective and professional, without losing sight of human courage and military skill. This was my first encounter with this new series, and an extremely impressive debut.
